Sensitivity to increased temperature in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis: a key symptomatic factor shown in a survey

چکیده

MSOffice1] Background: Many individuals diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are sensitive to increased body temperature, which has been recognized to correlate with the symptom of fatigue. The need to investigate this association has been highlighted. The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of heat sensitivity and its relations to disease course, disability, common MS-related symptoms and ongoing immunosuppressive treatments among individuals 65 years or younger diagnosed with MS. Method: A cross-sectional designed survey was undertaken. A questionnaire was sent to MS-patients with an Expanded Disability Status Score (EDSS) in the interval 0-6.5 and who were between 20 and 65 years of age, living in an eastern region of Sweden (n=334). Besides occurrence of heat sensitivity (Yes/No) and corresponding questions, the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), the MS-related symptom checklist and the Perceived Deficit Questionnaire (PDQ) was included. Data were analysed in relation to data level by Chi-square, Mann Whitney Utest, and Student’s t-test. Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlations were calculated. In logistic regression analyses (enter) dichotomized MS-symptoms were used as dependent variables, and EDSS, disease-course, heat-sensitivity, age and sex (female/male) were independent variables. In linear regression analyses, enter, summated FSS and PDQ were entered as dependent variables and EDSS, disease-course, heat-sensitivity, age and sex (female/male) were independent variables. Results: Of the responding patients (n=256), 58% reported heat sensitivity. The regression analyses revealed heat sensitivity as being a significant factor correlating not only with fatigue (p<0.001), but also with several other common MS symptoms such as pain (p<0.001), concentration difficulties (p<0.001), and urination urgency (p=0.009). Sensitivity to increased temperature in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis: a key symptomatic factor shown in a survey Discussion/Conclusion: The findings are discussed in relation to hypothesized explanations which need further investigation.

Oral Manifestation and Candida Albicans in Multiple Sclerosis Disease with Different Treatment Modalities

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease which is considered to be an autoimmune disease impacting the central nervous system (CNS). Patients with MS may have certain orofacial manifestations and oral microbiological changes as a result of different treatment modalities. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the changes of Candida Albicans in normal oral flora during different...

Background and aim: Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common autoimmune inflammatory diseases in young ages. Many aspects of this disease are still unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression and activity level of 15-lipoxygenase-1 (a producer of lipid peroxide and regulating inflammation and immune responses) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in patients wit...

Increased Expression of miR-202-3p in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis

Background and objectives: One of the latest studies in the genetics field is the evaluation of role of micro-RNAs as a biomarker for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), which is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) and emerges in the form of numerous small and large plaques in white matter in the brain and spinal cord. This disease could be associated with several comp...

P 16: The Effect of Reducing CCL11 on Multiple Sclerosis Treatment by Using Heterochronic Parabiosis Techniques

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neuroinflammatory disease that leads to distribute neurodegeneration in the grey and white matter of the brain. In MS, age-related iron accumulation, chronic oxidative injury and activation of microglia are key factors to create neurodegeneration. Also concentration of CCL11 is increased in multiple sclerosis. CCL11 can amplify glu...

P 129: The Role of Overexpression Transcription Factor BRN 4 in Multiple Sclerosis

Adult neurogenesis is a process of producing nerve cells from their progenitor that occurs in some areas in the brain such as the hypothalamus. Low activity in this area plays a role in neural degeneration and diseases such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and depression. MS is a neurodegenerative disease with a permanent disability that the main reason for it is axonal degeneration and neuronal...
